So here it is, the 6th episode of Rathole Radio. This was broadcast and recorded at 9pm on Sunday 9th of August 2009 from my studio here on Merseyside, UK. As usual I played an eclectic mix of tracks, we had some fun in the chat room, there was a vote and a live performance. I hope you enjoy listening. Here’s the vital details:

Listener Poll: We had a vote after I received an email from my friend Kevan in Jersey. That’s the original Jersey not New Jersey. He asked if that song C64 by Dollar Rex had his name in it. The vote disagreed and we decided it was probably saying “heaven”. Sorry Kev 😉

Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks

Words Of Wisdom: 30:10 – The fabulous Bill Hicks. A great hero of mine, this is a short clip from his live album Relentless. It’s about his travels in the Southern states of the USA. I also mentioned a great book I read about him, here’s the link. RIP Bill. Remember everyone, it’s just a ride.

Gig Alert!! Don_S who was present in the chat room during the show plays piano with the band Quantum Jazz. He has a gig in a small town in Denmark called Hundested, at Blå Ansjos. That’s Friday 14th of August, if you’re nearby go and check them out.

Live Acoustic Track – 56:35 – I decided to play one of my own songs this time. I had many requests for original stuff, no honestly :) This is a song I wrote a few years ago now called “Reality”. You can find a recorded version at Shedmusic.net if you want to download it. I release most of my music under the artist name Sonic Real Estate.  CC BY-SA Licensed

Email Competition: Send me your amusing suggestions for my catchphrase. It be something I say lot like “this one reminds me of ” or something you think I should say as a catchphrase. If it’s funny and I like it then you could win. I don’t know what the prize will be yet. I’m thinking of something like a CD or a book, that will be announced later. Send emails to the usual address – show AT ratholeradio.org

Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoyed the show. Thanks also to everyone who turned up in our IRC channel at irc.freenode.net the channel name is #ratholeradio. I don’t expect much to happen there in the weeks between shows, I probably won’t be around much, but if people want to hang around in there and chat you’re more than welcome. Don’t forget you can access the channel from a web browser by going to webchat.freenode.net and entering #ratholeradio in the channel text box. Take care till next time folks. I’ll be back with a live show on Sunday 23th of August at 9pm UK Time. Please join me and contribute to the live show, it’s a lot of fun.

What Others Are Saying

  1. Fiona August 10, 2009 at 4:57 pm

    Mur-Mee-Don Process.

I’ve never known anyone to be able to pronounce it. :)

People reading can download the version of the track that was played here: http://www.myrmidonprocess.com/rhr-wotwot/Myrmidon%20Process%20-%20Corvette%20Falling.ogg

It’s part of an upcoming release. Ta for playing it…!

  2. Dan August 10, 2009 at 5:04 pm

@Fiona – Ah ha so that’s how you say it. I’ll try and mention it the next show then. Glad I’m not the only one who struggled to pronounce it but I’ll add a correction :) Thanks for the link to the track. I’m sure people will appreciate it. Let me know when you sort out this release :)

  3. mynameis August 10, 2009 at 5:26 pm

The one live show that I miss and it’s the one that has my recommendation. Typical. :)

  4. Dan August 10, 2009 at 5:50 pm

@mynameis – Ah, sorry about that. It must be sod’s law :)

  5. skazhy August 12, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Wow, Pornophonique is really a nice discovery for me, thanks Dan! :)
You should check out Anamanaguchi from NYC, they’re also mixing the 8bit beeps with guitars: http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography/by/anamanaguchi

  6. Dan August 12, 2009 at 9:19 pm

@skazhy – No problem, I hadn’t played Pornophonique so far because I thought most people knew them, A friend pointed out that I might be wrong in that. Plus I really like that song so I had to play it. Glad you like the band, they’re very good. I’ll look into your tip, thanks.

  7. Morten Juhl-Johansen Zölde-Fejér (mjjzf) August 12, 2009 at 9:22 pm

As I said, Pornophonique’s 8-bit Lagerfeuer is a beautiful album.

  8. Dan August 12, 2009 at 9:26 pm

@mjjzf – It is! I have always thought so, for me there are one or two tracks on it I don’t like quite so much but it’s great album indeed. How can you not like anyone who uses an old school Gameboy on stage as an instrument? 😛

  9. Daz Fuller August 15, 2009 at 8:13 am

Took me a little longer than usual but that’s the Jamendo playlist updated and for all the number fans out there that’s now just over 100 hours of free music from one source :)

  10. Dan August 15, 2009 at 1:28 pm

    @Daz – Wow, great work thanks man. You’re a star! :)

  11. Hanna August 16, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I liked especially the tracks by Whitestar, Myrmidon Process and Merovingian. Very good stuff. And it was nice to hear TW Walsh / The Soft Drugs too (have been listening to them lately a lot in bus in the mornings). Thanks for the great show again. :)

  12. Dan August 16, 2009 at 4:41 pm

@hanna Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. You have good taste hehe 😛

  13. Philip August 17, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Best live track to date! /me shouts, “MORE!”

Great stuff, thank you Dan. :)

  14. Dan August 18, 2009 at 12:30 am

Wow thanks Philip, really glad you liked it. I should have practiced a bit more before the show but it was off the cuff. It is one of the best songs I’ve written I think. It’s about 3 years old now

  15. Raphael AJ August 23, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Someone mentioned Bill? I have to listen to your show if there are some hicksbits in it.

Oh f*ck it! I’ll even subscribe to the podcast.

  16. Dan August 23, 2009 at 3:55 pm

@Raphael – There was a Bill Hicks clip in this episode yes, hope you enjoy it :)

  17. Raphael AJ August 23, 2009 at 3:59 pm

    @Dan Great!

The podcast is being downloaded in iTunes right now so I can have the show with me on the train tomorrow. :)

  18. Daz Fuller August 24, 2009 at 5:37 pm

I finally managed to get around to listening to the podcast today (really late I know) and the “Kevin” or “Heaven” bit, it took a few minutes but I think I recognise it, it’s actually saying “error” and its from an old speak-and-spell. I think Limp Bizkit used something similar in their track Old Blue Eyes.

  19. Dan August 24, 2009 at 11:57 pm

@Daz – Wow you took this challenge very seriously. I admire your attention to detail, you could well be right :)

  20. Brendan P October 19, 2009 at 9:06 am

    Hi Dan,

Great show as always. I’m a bit behind… but getting there 😉

    Cheers
    B
