Back to a more regular show for this weeks Rathole Radio. There aren’t any guests so you’re stuck with just me. I play a wide range of music, with lots featuring brass instruments. This wasn’t a set plan I just realised there was a lot of brass going on half way through the show. I also play a live track, there’s some Words Of Wisdom from Howard Marks and plenty more. I hope you enjoy the show.

I talked about the mysterious iTunes problems last time and asked for email feedback.  People told me the download was corrupted or it didn’t play in iTunes. The show was released in exactly the same way as normal so I have no idea why this would be. If you have any thoughts or comments feel free to let me know. Thanks :)

  • 28:07 – Words Of Wisdom: Howard Marks – “Foreign Qualifications”. Another clip from the maverick Welshman, this time talking about teaching English to some of the hardest criminals in the world at San Quentin prison. It seems the US Prison System doesn’t put much stock in dodgy qualifications like a Masters Degree in Nuclear Physics from Oxford University. Check out Howard’s book Mr Nice for more stories like this.
  • 30:16 – The Zverstvo – Too Much Of A Porn FilmCC BY-NC-SA

Live Acoustic Track: 42:33 – “Stringman” by Neil Young. A song I used to sing years back in the folk clubs. This is a guitar arrangement of a piano tune really, but it works very well I think. Hope you enjoy it.

  • 46:49 – Special Quartet – The SearchCC BY-NC-SA

Let Me Know What You Think: Please send me your thoughts and feedback on the music I play or any other aspect of the show. If you make music or you know people who make music and you think they should be on the show, send me suggestions and demos by all means. I’m always pleased to find new music and share it with people. Most of that is down to you, the wonderful listeners and your wisdom. Please send emails to the usual address – show AT ratholeradio.org

Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoyed the show. Thanks also to everyone who turned up in our IRC channel at irc.freenode.net the channel name is #ratholeradio. I don’t expect much to happen there in the weeks between shows, I probably won’t be around much, but if people want to hang around in there and chat you’re more than welcome. Don’t forget you can access the channel from a web browser by going to webchat.freenode.net and entering #ratholeradio in the channel text box. Take care till next time folks.

“Zverstvo” means “beastliness”, by the way.

@mjjzf – Ah, perfect name for a punk band then. I get it now, thanks :)

  5. Hanna November 8, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I have always liked saxophones, there is something magical in them. I think if I were a musician, it would be my instrument.

  6. Dan November 8, 2009 at 6:45 pm

@hanna – I always wanted to learn the sax when I was kid but 2 things stopped me: 1) It’s really hard and 2) They’re really expensive. I could never afford one, especially compared to the cost of a guitar or other instrument which was much lower. Maybe one day I’ll learn, right after I learn another language and do all the other things I keep putting off for the future 😀

Just listened to this episode, first time listening to Rathole Radio. Only ever heard you on Linux Outlaws, but damn, you can really sing! Great selection of music!

    Hi Dan!

Nice podcast and I like the diversity of styles and genres you play very much!

I’m listen up to older shows in random order and last week I heard this one. Your reference to “The Fast Show” made me smile and happy, because I like it very much. It’s one of my favorites in british comedy! (Although, I don’t know if this means much, due to the fact that I am german ;-))

To the roller song: You are damn right, it sounds really like AC/DC, which isn’t a bad thing though. But I would say, the singer sounds more like Bon Scott (the first singer of AC/DC), at least at the end!

I am eager to hear a new show and new stuff from you!

    Dirk
