A very special edition of Rathole Radio this time as I was joined by one of my comedy heroes Alexei Sayle. People keep saying we look like twins but I don’t know about that. Check out the picture below and decide for yourself. I also played my usual eclectic mix of music and performed a live track. So put the kettle on, put your feet up and enjoy the music and chat.

It’s time for another Rathole Radio and together with my usual eclectic mix of tunes I also have a fabulous guest. Fit & The Conniptions AKA Wayne Myers joins us live to talk about music, Linux, funny names and more. I had some technical problems getting him on the line but once I’d got some more coal in the furnace we were away. Enjoy! Continue Reading →

The last Rathole Radio before the gig on April 24th in Liverpool. I think I’m beyond nerves now, not about playing and performing, that’s easy. More about nobody turning up :S Anyway, enough of that, this is the BIGGEST Rathole Radio over as guest Nick Tann and I discussed music, podcasting, aerial photography and much more. There’s also plenty of music. Enjoy!

  • 00:00 – Betamax DCRadio (Where Did You Go?)CC BY-ND-ND Licensed – Japanese artist, can be found on Jamendo. Best wishes to all in Japan right now, we haven’t forgotten you!
  • 05:49 – Insanity Hurts18 With A BulletLicense Unknown - Scouse hip hop suggested by Adrian McEwen. This track is great and it’s nice to hear people rapping with Liverpool accents.
  • 14:35 Nick Tann – 3am (Vinyl Project Version) – License Unknown

19:30 – Interview guest: Nick Tann

  • 35:33 – Nick Tann – One Night Stand (Vinyl Project Version) – License Unknown

Much more waffle from Nick and I. Check out Nick’s music on Bandcamp and support him, independent artists rock! We really Ratholed this and talked for ages, the show lives up to it’s name ;)

  • 71:18 – Nick Tann – How Can It Be Wrong – License Unknown
  • 77:12 – Greg BaumontLa Face Cachee De La LuneCC BY-NC-ND Licensed – Interesting bit of breakbeat/trip hop almost by this French artist from Strasbourg. Can be found on Jamendo. I like the weird opera samples with the ladies voice.
  • 86:55 – W.E.I.R.DGreen EyesCC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Interesting stuff, it’s hard to know how to describe it exactly. The genre list on Jamendo says Rock, Experimental, Ambient, Drum & Bass. So I think they’re struggling to define it too. Thanks to Kevie for the recommendation.

GIG MENTION:
Thanks to everyone who’s supported the Rathole Radio gig, it’s in 1 week! I’ve added Paypal to the options because Google Checkout doesn’t work in a lot of countries. Some people requested the option to buy non-attendee sponsor tickets and support us. I can’t believe it, THANK YOU!
You’ll be able to watch the gig online and interact via the chatroom and microblogs, this is all free and there’s no ticket needed. We’d really appreciate your support if you find this entertaining though.

I forgot to go through donations this week, but I’ll catch up next time. If you’d like to chip in, however large or small, I appreciate it. You can use the Paypal button to the right. You don’t need a Paypal account credit cards are accepted. Thank you! There are now Flattr buttons on the site too, you asked for them, so click them mothers!!

Please spread the word about the show, tell 1 friend, it could make a big difference if everyone does it :)

Get In Touch: Please send me your thoughts and feedback on the music I play or any other aspect of the show. If you make music or you know people who make music and you think they should be on the show, send me suggestions and demos by all means. I’m always pleased to find new music and share it with people. Most of that is down to you, the wonderful listeners and your wisdom.

Welcome to a very special Rathole Radio. We have our first guest session this time from the fabulous I Am Not Lefthanded, a band I’ve played on the show a few times before. I really like them and as you’ll hear in the interview they’re great folks and very funny. I also found time to play my usual eclectic range of music before and after the interview. There’s less tunes than normal an more waffle but I wanted to take the chance to really get to know the guests. I hope you enjoy the show!

I mentioned Guru’s health situation and wished him well. Take care man, hip hop needs you.

I talked about our fabulous New logo. Big thanks to Scott from Bad Format for making it.

  • 16:31 – I Am Not Lefthanded – Endline (Choose Nothing)CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I made a mistake, this is not off their latest EP, it’s off the previous one, doh!!
Their latest EP

I mentioned Pete Cannon’s Cool Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down reviews :P

This episode of Rathole Radio marks something of a landmark for us, our first live guest on the show. We’ve had interviews before but always pre-recorded rather than live. I was privileged to be joined on the phone by American singer/songwriter David Rovics. We had a great long chat, played some records and generally had fun. I also played some eclectic music picks and drew the winner of the competition. So I hope you enjoy the show.

  • 00:00 – Lucy’s Fur Coat – Falling Out – License Unknown – Suggestion by DerekSD – Now retired band from California. Worth a listen though.

Competition Winner: The winner drawn at random was Ian Folland, an old friend of mine. I feel a bit guilty about that but it was purely random I promise. Ian lives down South now so I’ll have to post the CD off to him ASAP.

  • 13:17 – David Rovics – Song For The Eureka Stockade – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed

16:51 - Special Phone Guest: David Rovics. I was delighted to be joined live on the phone from the States by singer / songwriter David Rovics. I saw David play live supporting Billy Bragg in Liverpool back in May. He’s a great singer and a powerful songwriter who discusses political issues in the best tradition of rebel song. We discussed his new album “Ten Thousand Miles Away”, which was released this month. You can find David’s music on Jamendo, and also at Soundclick.com

  • 35:16 – David Rovics – Travelodge – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed

David mentioned his book on distributing your own music and singing for you supper. You can find more details on that and buy other bits of merchandise from his online store. David is also currently on a tour of mid-west with Anne Feeney, so I advise you to catch them live if you can. At the time of writing his website has been hacked but you can find tour details here.

  • 58:15 – David Rovics – Operation Iraqi Liberation (live version) – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed

Feedback: I read an email from George De Bruin, who actually met David Rovics at a concert in the last week and took some video of the event. I was really pleased too hear that. Thanks George. Thanks also to Ed Fonseca, Mjjzf, Steve, Taiyo Rawle and Liam McCombes for their emails.

I also talked about the new Mixcloud account I created for the show. Please head over there and show your support, I’d appreciate it.

Episode 3 is upon us, and this time I’m writing to you from lovely Bonn, Germany. I’ve been here for the last week and I pre-recorded this show before leaving. At the time I should be doing the live show I’ll actually be on a plane heading back towards England from Amsterdam. This jet set life style is fun, but also very tiring. I think I’ll sleep most of next week. Anyway, this show is a little different as we have our first guests, Professor Kliq and his manager. Here’s the vital details:

  • 00:00 – The Soft Drugs – Defending The Paint – License Unknown
  • 08:11 – Kabbage – Breakfast – From the 2008 album “Patchwork Soup” – CC BY-NC-SA
  • 12:56 – Revolution Void – Headphonetic – CC BY-NC-SA
  • 19:40 – Convey – Chalkboard – CC BY-NC-SA

Interview: Professor Kliq & Dan Costalis. I had a great chat with Professor Kliq (AKA Mike) and his manager Dan (good name). We discussed how he makes his music, how Creative Commons affects it, lab coats and much much more. I also got him to pick a couple of his tracks for us to play and discuss.

  • 33:17 – Professor Kliq – Ambition
  • 50:08 – Professor Kliq – Plastic And Flashing Lights

From the album The Scientific Method Volume 2. Licensed under CC BY-SA

Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoyed the show.  Thanks also to Mike and Dan for joining me, I had great fun talking to them. Don’t forget if you’re a musician or you’re in a band, I want to hear what you do. If I like it, I’ll play it. Simple, them’s the rules! I don’t care what style it is, how professional or un-professional you are, send it. Take care till next time folks. I’ll be back with a live show on Sunday 12th July at 9pm. Please join me and contribute to the live show, it’s a lot of fun.

Feedback and suggestions: The show is only possible thanks to your involvement and help. If you play music or you know someone who plays music, send it to me and I’ll have a listen. If I like it, I play it. It’s that simple. If you hear something you’d like to suggest for the show please do, I’m always happy to hear from you.
